                District 4/6 Orchestra does not have pre-auditions, but chooses students for the orchestra through a selection meeting that is held via Zoom. Check back for a date, but it’s usually on a Sunday near the end of October. Any director may bring a string player (whether you have a scheduled orchestra program or not) as long as they meet the minimum playing competencies. However, you will be added to the host/co-host rotation in the next five years. Home-schooled students are permitted to participate as long as the District Coordinator is contacted by October 15th.
Please read the excerpt from the District 4/6 Orchestra Handbook below about bringing winds and percussion:
The selection of Wind and Percussion players to the District 4 and 6 Orchestra shall be made only from the schools which have a “scheduled/curricular” FULL ORCHESTRA that functions during the school day.  The guideline for representation is approximately one wind player for every three string players accepted into the District Orchestra. Addendum: When the PMEA District 4/6 orchestra schools have a wind and/or percussion vacancy after their selection meeting, the following actions may be taken to fill those vacancies. 1. The District coordinator will send an email to the participating directors first to offer those vacant spots to those schools.
2. Then, if vacancies are still open: the DC will Contact the district 4&6 presidents for them to invite specific students (through their criteria) to fill the vacant instrumentation. With the understanding that these schools will not be held to the hosting responsibilities. However, if the student qualifies for regions and would like to participate in District Orchestra the following year, then they (the school/Director) will be held to the PMEA District 4/6 policy (hosting responsibilities.)
